In 2022, when Kāinga Ora and Signature Homes began construction of new apartments on Felix Street in Oranga, two natural lava caves were uncovered. These tomo hold deep significance for mana whenua. Although they had been structurally reinforced, covered amd closed off, the partners wanted their presence acknowledged and honoured.
Working alongside the project team and the area’s three iwi, I shaped the storytelling across three narrative pillars: geological, cultural and traditional, plus a fourth landmark as a place of reflection for these taonga. We agreed the stories would be told in the first person voice of Tāmaki Makaurau, giving each story real character.
I collaborated closely with iwi to develop each narrative, guided the inclusion of appropriate whakataukī and selected excavated stones to serve as pou, positioned throughout the development, with two stones facing towards Maunagkiekie/One Tree Hill and Rarotonga /Mount Smart, the two mountains that formed the lava caves.
As a creative outside the iwi involved, it was a privilege to be trusted to help ensure these hidden treasures are remembered.
