Scriptwriter for TV, radio and video

Thirty seconds is a long time if nobody's watching.

I'm Dunc Blair, a freelance scriptwriter in Auckland. For 25 years I've written TV commercials, radio ads, branded content and the odd airline safety video for agencies and brands in New Zealand and Australia.

I specialise in characters built to last.

The best known is probably Dave, a migratory goose too lazy to fly to America under his own steam, so he went Air New Zealand. Bryan Brown gave him his voice. Sam Neill turned up later as Pete the Kiwi. Dave stayed on screens either side of the Tasman for seven years.

For Fuji Xerox, Solomon Fujigwe, a man from Nigeria offered printers a very shady golden opportunity. And Asthma Man, Symbicort's beige-tracksuited nuisance, was voted the worst ad in New Zealand at the Fair Go Ad Awards but still made the best list. Characters people connect with and brands can keep coming back to.

I don't hand over a script and disappear. I sit in on casting, direct voice talent in the studio and work with directors to ensure we get the best performance from actors.

What I write

TV commercials. Radio. Online video and social content. Narration and voiceover scripts. Branded content and explainers. Safety and training videos. Character campaigns that can run for years.

"Funny, moving or hilarious, Dunc's scripts are always on point, and he finds a creative angle for even the toughest challenges." Perry Bradley, Owner and Director, Film Construction

"Whether it's casting voice talent or directing them in the studio, he knows exactly what he's after." Vedat Kiyici, Owner and Head Engineer, Envy Studios
